Design that makes a difference

Falling for Decorating

As far as seasons go – fall is by far my favorite.  It saddens me that fall is so short here in the North Country and is so rapidly followed by bitter cold for months, and months, and months, and months, and….  But Fall…sweet Fall…it’s crisp, cool air, warm sun, vibrant colors, rich smells, and the invitation to cozy up.  Yes, by far the best season of the year!  It also houses my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving!  I love Thanksgiving deeply for so many reasons…perhaps because I have so many reasons to be thankful!

Fall decorating has now surpassed Christmas decorating in my book.  I can’t quite put my finger on it…whether it’s the colors, the smells, the fact that it’s not too cold to go into my garage to retrieve my supplies…but whatever the reason – I love it.  So in celebration – here are a few decorating ideas and tips for your fall festivities.

Tip 1:  The table – whether hosting a dinner party or not, I’m a firm believer that a table should always be properly dressed.  Small to large, the table is a gathering place and warrants an inviting gesture.

Tip 2:  As with any holiday decorating – Don’t Over Do It!!!  It’s so easy to want to go all out…especially when all of the retail merchandisers have their vignettes dressed to the nines!  But when it comes to reality, less is pretty much always more.  I tend to pick one or two focal points upon which to relase my creative energy.  Great options for these are the table (covered above), serving area, fireplace, cocktail table, or bookcase.

Tip 3:  This goes along with “Tip 2”, but in addition to not over-doing it…may I recommend that holiday decorations remain focused in one or two rooms as well.  Again, easy to want to drape each doorway, towel bar, and surface with glittered garland and scented candles, a little goes a long way.  Holiday decorating can easily make a home feel cluttered and distract from the true delight of any holiday – your loved ones.

Little touches can add a lot!

So with all of that in mind – peruse your favorite pumpkin patch, indulge your creativity at your favorite craft store, and deck your halls with falls great bounty of beauty, richness, and thankfulness!
